Asiad 2026 and the test named U23 Vietnam

The Vietnam Football Federation has set a quarterfinal target for U23 Vietnam at the 2026 Asian Games. With 16 of the 23 players having trained together in July, the squad carries a clear sense of stability. Additions such as Ly Duc, Quang Kiet, Pham Minh Phuc, Le Phat and Ngoc My are not newcomers. Most have already played in V-League or international youth tournaments. That foundation gives coach Dinh Hong Vinh’s side confidence ahead of a group featuring Uzbekistan, Kuwait and the Philippines. Uzbekistan remain the biggest threat, but a top-two finish is within reach if Vietnam handle the other two matches well. This article does not view Asiad merely through results. The bigger point is the test coach Kim Sang Sik has set for the generation that won a bronze medal at the U23 Asian Cup. The 2026 Asian Games is part of a pathway leading beyond the 2027 Asian Cup. Young players must force themselves into the Korean coach’s plans. Every match against Uzbekistan, Kuwait or the Philippines is a chance to show composure. But Asiad is not the only door. Regular performances in V-League or the First Division also count. Based on my experience following matches, young Vietnamese players improve most when they play regularly in a competitive environment. Many fans think Asiad is just a friendly tournament. In reality, Kim Sang Sik is testing how players handle pressure. He does not need someone who only shines at youth level. He needs players mature enough to start in V-League before thinking about the national team. Therefore, the quarterfinal ticket is only a milestone. The larger goal lies in how each player earns a starting spot at his club. The door to the national team will open wider for those who seize both opportunities: shining at Asiad and staying consistent in domestic football. This Asian Games can be a turning point for a generation of Vietnamese players, but only if they understand that every match is a test, not a step toward fame.
